Common ADHD Drug Therapies
Many families have become more aware of the problem of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As the incidents of children with ADHD increases, more and more families may be stressed to find that a family member suffers from ADHD.
Common drugs used for treating ADHD include amphetamines, atomoxetin, methylphenidate drugs, and dextroamphetamines. These drugs are known by brand names like Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, Wellbutrin, Methylin, Focalin XR, Metadate CD, Vivanse, and Strattera. The only non-stimulant among these drugs for treatment of ADHD is Strattera.
One of the most common methyphenidates used to treat ADHD is Ritalin. Some patients are effectively treated by Ritalin. Some parents, however, report that Ritalin only aggravates their children, who become more aggressive or display other adverse symptoms.
Another commonly used drug for ADHD is Concerta. Concerta is also a methylphenidate. Unlike Ritalin and other methylphenidates the makers of Concerta have developed a time release technology that administers a steady dose of methylphenidate throughout the day.
Adderall is another commonly used ADHD medication. Adderall, available in tablets and capsules, is a mixture of amphetamines and dextroamphetamines, sometime referred to as “Amphetamine Mixed Salts.”
Sometimes stimulants do not work to treat ADHD. In these cases doctors may prescribe another common Amedication, Straterra. Straterra is the not a stimulant. If Straterra does not work, the doctor may then prescribe antihypertensive drugs.
Scientific and clinical studies have shown these drugs to be effective in the treatment of ADHD. There is no denying, however, that there are a number of incidences of side effects linked with the intake of these medications. Most side effects are mild, but severe adverse effects have been experienced by some individuals using these medications.
If your child is currently on medication for ADHD but is troubled by side effects, you may want to try ADHD alternative treatments. When switching to alternative treatments, it is helpful to consult your child’s doctor before trying alternative treatment for ADHD.
